7 Plank Wagon in the livery of The Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Limited. In 1860 Gloucester was an important railway crossroads, with goods being transferred between the standard and broad gauge railways that met there. A group of local merchants identified a shortage of goods wagons and established the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company to build them. The company flourished, having completed 313 wagons in their first year they were soon building 50 wagons a week and began exporting their products in 1867. The company expanded to offer a wagon hire business which boasted a hire pool of 10,000 wagons, one of which is portrayed by our model, decorated in the company livery for advertising purposes. As well as offering engineering products and horse drawn road vehicles, government contracts were undertaken during both World Wars including the construction of 764 Churchill tanks for World War 2. After the war, wagons continued to be manufactured for British Railways along with tube stock for London Transport. The company closed in 1986 with any remaining business being acquired by Powell Duffryn of Cardiff in 1990. At its peak the company employed 2,400 workers at their site which occupied more than 28 acres and at one time exported 85% of all orders making them a truly international company.
