Details

Black 5 No. 45157 'The Glasgow Highlander' in BR Lined Black Late Crest. The Black 5 locomotives were some of the most successful steam locomotive designs, being built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) to the design of their Chief Mechanical Engineer, Sir William Stanier. The first locomotive was completed in September 1934, with a total of 842 being built over a 17 year period, the final Black 5 being out shopped in May 1951. The locomotives were so well regarded that they were used right up until the very last day of steam on British Rail in August 1968. Four of the Black 5s were named, with No. 45157 receiving its name 'The Glasgow Highlander' during a ceremony at Glasgow Central Station on 6th March 1936, at which time the locomotive was No. 5157 of the London Midland and Scottish Railway. At one point, almost a third of the 842 locomotives were allocated to the Scottish region and all four of the named examples were from this group, with each carrying the name of a Scottish Regiment. Although 18 Black 5s have been preserved, and whilst none of the named examples survived, No. 45407 has masqueraded as its class-mate on at least one occasion during the preservation era.
