Details

Class 85 Electric No.85101 'Doncaster Plant 150' in Railfreight Distribution Triple Grey.

40 AL5 locomotives (Class 85 under TOPS) were built between 1961 and 1964 at BR’s Doncaster works for use on the newly electrified West Coast Main Line. These 100mph rated locomotives were used on a variety of mixed traffic work over the electrified route. In 1989 14 Class 85s were re-numbered in the 85/1 series and downgraded to 80mph when BR Railfreight converted them for freight only operations due to late delivery of the new Class 90 locomotives. None of the 85/1s lasted long enough to receive the planned livery that is carried by the model, with 85101 being withdrawn in November 1991.

The livery carried by this model is different on each side, reflecting the two alternative designs put forward for final selection. The Railfreight Distribution graphic is only applied to one side accurately reflecting the livery that No. 85101 currently carries, having been named "Doncaster Plant 150 1853 - 2003" at the Doncaster Works open days on 27th July 2003.
