Details

14 Ton Tank Wagon in Admiralty Naval Stores Department Livery No. 229.

To complement recent club releases we are pleased to present our latest 14T Tank Wagon in the livery of the Admiralty Naval Stores Department, No. 229.

Built in 1918, No. 229 was one of a batch of 13 wagons constructed by Hurst Nelson, which were numbered in the series 229-235 and 330-335. Our wagon was registered to the London & North Western Railway and would have seen use transporting highly flammable Class A liquids such as petroleum spirit to service the fleet of the Admiralty.

This particular wagon could be used in fast freight trains as denoted by the white star on the right hand side above the solebar. This marking was introduced in 1913 as traditionally, tank wagons had only been used in slow trains which inevitably caused delays. To be allowed to run in fast trains, wagons had to be built to the latest design with oil axle-boxes and first had to complete 100 miles of running in slow trains, which averaged speeds of 35mph, before they could run in fast trains. Once running in fast trains, each wagon had to be inspected at 40 mile intervals to ensure that they were still fit for traffic.
