Our model portrays 5 plank wagon No. 539 which is finished in grey livery with black metal work and white lettering. The model includes the two plaques on each side of the wagon which read ‘Swithland Sidings’ and ‘Near Rothley North Leicestershire’ – it is thought these plaques were used to aid the return of the wagons to the correct quarry.
The Mountsorrel Granite Company (MGC) was formed in 1854 to quarry granite in the Leicestershire village of Mountsorrel. Situated between the Midland Railway at Barrow-Upon-Soar and the Great Central Railway at Swithland Sidings, an internal railway network was used to transport products to the Midland route (this connection being made in 1860) and later to the Great Central via Swithland.
The company once had more than 750 wagons which operated not only on the internal rail network but also across the entire British railway network delivering MGC products. The product range included large setts used in buildings & construction projects and crushed stone for roadways, as well as paving setts and kerb stones which could all be purchased via agents throughout the country for delivery to local railway stations. Further quarries were purchased by the MGC in the early 1920s and as a result the company’s wagons could also be seen operating from these sites.
As road haulage increased the internal railway system fell out of use in the 1950s, with the track being lifted between the Quarry and both main-line links shortly afterwards. In recent years the line running from Swithland Sidings on the Great Central Railway has been re-instated as a branch line which runs to the edge of the quarry which is still operational.
Although none of the original MGC wagons are known to have survived, three similar wagons have been restored and decorated in authentic MGC livery on the Great Central Railway. Restoration began in September 2009 and since completion the three wagons have featured in demonstration goods trains.
